In a bold new opinion piece on the Huffington Post, political blogger/entertainment attorney Miles Mogulescu is calling on coalition group Americans For Financial Reform to organize a “Million Person March”, a mass mobilization of progressives tired of standing by while the Tea Party movement dominates the political news of the day. His recommended theme? “Use Our Taxes To Support Main Street, Not Wall Street”.
While his plan is ambitious and would need the cooperation of not only Americans For Financial Reform but a wide array of progressive media, it’s certainly not outside the realm of possibility (although the mobilization better start happening quickly if the march is to happen on his proposed date of April 17th). The larger point Mogulescu seems to be making, though — Million Person March or not — is that organizations and individual Americans in favor of realfinancial reform need to start making some noise if they want to be heard above the blaring horns of the Tea Party movement.
The March Mogulescu envisions would be preceded by a week of direct citizen action, including hundreds of thousands lining up at “big bank” branches around the country — Citibank, Bank of America, et al. — to close their accounts and open new ones at small community banks and credit unions, as well as civil, symbolic protests outside the corporate headquarters of giants like Goldman Sachs and Citigroup.
